Endodontics: Frequently Asked Questions

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is the dental specialty focused on diagnosing and treating problems inside the tooth, particularly the pulp and root, most commonly through root canal therapy.

When would I need to see an endodontist?

You may be referred to an endodontist for a root canal, cracked tooth repair, or an apicoectomy, especially in cases involving persistent pain, infection, or a failed prior root canal.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Modern root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia and is generally no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Most patients feel significant relief once the infected tissue is removed.

Do I need a referral to see your endodontist?

Most patients are referred by their general dentist, though you can also contact our office directly to schedule with Dr. Bahador.

What happens if a tooth can’t be saved with a root canal?

If a root canal alone can’t resolve the infection, your endodontist may recommend an apicoectomy to preserve the tooth, or in some cases, extraction as a last resort.

Will I need a crown after endodontic treatment?

Many teeth that undergo root canal therapy need a crown afterward to restore strength and prevent future fracture, which our restorative team can coordinate.
